On 22, 23 and 24 March, staff from CNP Assurances, trainee developers, UX design students and graduate school students gathered at La Cartonnerie in Paris for an exciting challenge: in the space of just 48 hours, they had to produce an interactive mock-up or a prototype application offering customers new services based on the theme of “Live life to the full! We’re there to support you whatever you’re looking to do”. These new services should be simple, quick and easy to activate for the customer (On Demand insurance) and should also make life easier for him by meeting his needs in a “tailored” manner, at any time. A brainstorming phase ahead of the hackathon enabled the participants to put forward ideas for new services and challenge them.

The packed and fast-paced schedule for this hackathon* was organised around 3 key stages:

  • To take up the challenge, on the 1st day the 50 participants quickly formed 10 multidisciplinary teams with varied profiles (including people with knowledge of insurance and those without, baby-boomers, generation X, generation Y, etc.)
  • On the 2nd day, each team needed to have a stable outline for its project ready by midday and to have started work on producing the App or the mock-up
  • Finally, during the 3rd day, the teams had to finalise their presentation and prepare their pitch for the final jury.

Throughout their work, the participants were supported by mentors, who included experts from CNP Assurances but also managers of start-ups. With their wider outlook, know-how and experience, they helped the participants to ask the right questions, to fine-tune their project and to challenge themselves! And to help the teams come up with ideas, inspiring keynotes** given by the start-ups were held throughout these 3 days: Clac des doigts, Victor & Charles, Jam, Lydia and Sparted.

Finally, on the last day, the 10 teams had 3 minutes to present their pitches to a jury comprised of members drawn from both outside and from within the company: Alice DELAIRE (Masters in IEP) and Nathalie KINDT (from the SoonSoonSoon Agency) but also Hélène FALCHIER, Jean-Paul FAUGERE, Antoine LISSOWSKI, Magali NOE and Peggy SEJOURNE from CNP Assurances. Based on sereval criteria, the jury picked the 3 winning teams and a favorite award.Well done to the winning teams and to everyone who helped make this event a success!#Hacklassurance ;-)

* Hackathon: A portmanteau of the words "hack" and "marathon", a hackathon is an event during which teams (comprised of developers but also sometimes designers and project leaders) must develop an IT project, generally a software solution or application. They are generally organised over a limited period of time which is often quite short (a day, a night or a weekend). The aim is therefore to quickly code something clever (hence the "hack"). It also involves carrying out development work in an intensive, non-stop way (hence the marathon). A festive atmosphere is often found at these competitions, at the end of which the jury chooses the winners and awards them their prizes.

** Keynote: is both the name of the presentation software developed by Apple and the name of the conferences given by Steve Jobs at Apple. A Keynote is therefore a dynamic and engaging presentation.
